No More Bombs Members in Action

B'hamProtest-21Jan2026.jpg

January 21, 2026

We met with Rep. Larsen’s aid in Bellingham, She was impressed with the NWANW petitions that had around 1,100 signatures and indicated they would make a good impression. Rep. Larsen is supportive of the New Start Treaty but hasn't taken action. It runs out February 5, 2026.

January 30, 2026

A letter to the Editor of the Skagit Valley Herald.

As if there isn’t enough going on, the only treaty between the U.S. and Russia to limit nuclear weapons — the New START Treaty — will expire on Feb. 5. The U.S. and Russia hold 90% of the worldwide nuclear weapon stockpile. New START replaced the original START Treaty from 1991 and verifiably reduced nuclear weapons on each side from 6,000 to 1,550. This was the norm. There is no other such treaty in sight. Having no limit on nuclear weapons is more frightening than the daily cataclysms we’re witnessing. Vladimir Putin offered to uphold New START for one year while developing a new treaty if the U.S. does the same. As of Jan. 20 Moscow said it had not received a formal response from Donald Trump. Companion resolutions H. RES. 100 and S. RES. 61 in the House and Senate support “the continued value of arms control agreements and negotiated constraints on Russian and Chinese strategic nuclear forces.” China is building its nuclear stockpile faster than any Non-Proliferation Treaty country. Senators Cantwell and Murray and Congressman Larsen should support these resolutions. As of Jan. 27, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists in their 80th assessment of global risks moved the “Doomsday Clock” to 85 seconds before midnight — the closest we have ever been to catastrophe. It said, "Hard-won global understandings are collapsing and undermining the international cooperation critical to reducing the risks of nuclear war … and other apocalyptic dangers." Think of what else we and others could do with the trillions of dollars we invest in weapons. We are just one accident, one misunderstanding, or one tantrum away from nuclear disaster. How long will our luck hold out? We have created these risks; it is up to us to reduce them. We've accomplished gargantuan change in the past and must fight to do it again. Julia Hurd Burlington

No More Bombs member Bill, joined Jack and Felice of the Nuclear Resister (https://www.nukeresister.org/) at the Raytheon weapons plant in Tucson, AZ. Raytheon has received Billions to build the Long Range Stand-Off missile (L.R.S.O). At shift change there was a lot of traffic.

La Conner Nuclear Disarmament Resolution  The Town Council of La Conner unanimously passed a nuclear disarmament resolution during their regularly scheduled council meeting Tuesday, April 22. What a way to honor Earth Day! La Conner is the first municipality in Washington State to pass a "Back From the Brink" resolution as part of a national grass-roots campaign to reduce the threat of nuclear war. As MaryLee Chamberlain, the council person who introduced it said: "It feels like putting into action a tremendous value we all have...[for] our humanity, our safety, and the hope of the world." Back from the Brink is a non-partisan, U.S.-based, grassroots coalition of individuals, organizations, and elected officials working on a multi-year campaign to rid the world of nuclear weapons and secure a set of common-sense U.S. nuclear weapons policies to make the world safer. Back from the Brink was founded by leaders from the Union of Concerned Scientists and Physicians for Social Responsibility. 86 cities, counties and state legislative bodies have passed Back from the Brink resolutions, including the states of California and Oregon. 430 local and state elected officials and 44 members of Congress have endorsed the policy platform, including State Representative Dave Paul, State Senator Sharon Shewmake, and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. 495 health, environmental, academic, peace, faith, justice, and civic organizations have endorsed the campaign, including the US Conference of Mayors. The local group No More Bombs endorsed the campaign and pushed for the La Conner Resolution. A little known or remembered fact is that Skagit County became a Nuclear Free Zone in 1985. 62% of Skagit County voters were in favor of it. The Back From The Brink Five Policy Solutions are   pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate nuclear arsenals;  renouncing using nuclear weapons first;  ending the sole authority of the president to launch a nuclear attack;  taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert; and  canceling the plan to replace its entire arsenal with enhanced weapons. The Town Council of the Town of La Conner also calls on the United States to embrace the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Back from the Brink and No More Bombs wish to thank the La Conner Town Council, the La Conner Mayor and the Town Administration for this Resolution.

TABLING AT THE TULIP FESTIVAL STREET FAIR, 2025

We were able to engage with the public for three busy days during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Our hardy volunteers handed out pennies for a poll to learn where visitors want their tax dollars to go, (education came in 1st and the military was last). There was plenty of candy to give away and even handmade Ukrainian flags thanks to Jackie.

2025 ANTI-NUCLEAR CONFERENCE

The Nuclear Triad

No More Bombs meeting on May 3rd 2024

We enjoyed our discussion with an ex-Airforce Missileer. We all agreed that the abolishment of Nuclear weapons is the best solution. But if we can't do that, what do we do?

To the right you can see slides he provided with Pros and Cons for each leg of the Triad: IBCM's, Bombers and Submarines.  People say that land-based ICBM locations are known by the enemy so they would be wiped out in the first strike so why pay for them? Turns out only a direct hit can destroy one and they are relatively cheap so there are many.

We've been against spending money on updating missiles that can already wipe out civilization. He explained that updating allows new safety features and better control. Maybe, as long as we destroy the old ones!

The United States needs to lead the way in reducing the number of weapons and stop setting the example of weapon build-up that is being followed by other nations - making the whole world more dangerous.
